CSED is partnering with Kayak-iti-Yat to offer free kayaking lessons to community members 14 years or older. The event will take place at Bayou St. John Saturday, November, 14 at 9 a.m. No experience is necessary and life jackets will be provided.

Eat Dat! New cookbook offers healthy, affordable recipes

 
CSED is a partner and contributor to a new cookbook called "Eat Dat!" It features 80 pages of nutritious, healthy, affordable meals for New Orleans residents. Best of all, it's free to download. 
 
More fresh produce options coming to Lower 9

The Sankofa FRESH STOP MARKET will open next Saturday, October 24 at 5029 St Claude Ave (at the corner of Forstall and St. Claude). The FRESH STOP MARKET will sell fruits and vegetables grown in Sankofa's gardens, as well as, fresh options grown by local Louisiana farmers and New Orleans-based food distributors. They'll also have fresh shrimp. The organization also has a mobile market (see the schedule). 
Help rebuild Mt. Nebo Baptist Church

2015 New Orleans Neighborhood Summit
 
CSED is partnering with the Mayor's Neighborhood Engagement Office for the 2015 New Orleans Neighborhood Summit. EvacuKids program seeks to expand in grade schools
EvacuKids program is made up of 6 one-hour modules on weather, climate and hurricane preparedness. They'd like to offer this curriculum this spring to 4 - 5 classrooms in grades 3 - 5. If you'd like to suggest a Title I school (or a school where at least 80% of students qualify for fee lunch) please contact Kali Roy at [email protected].

CSED welcomes grad students from 13 Southeast Asian countries
 
Graduate students from over 13 Southeast Asian countries visited the CSED Environmental and Wetland research facility as part of their tour of the Lower 9th Ward. This group will be studying environmental issues with a specific focus on climate change and natural disaster recovery and mitigation in coastal areas at the University of Montana's Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center.
Lower 9 ladies get fit with GirlTrek
 
Ladies in Lower 9 are getting fit with GirlTrek, a national organization of more than 35,000 black women that aims to re-establish walking as a tradition, healing bodies, inspiring daughters and reclaiming neighborhood streets. 
 
Labyrinth of Love gathering
 
Special thanks to Elder Turner and his church family from Disciples of Christ Christian Fellowship Ministry, his parishioners, and all of our neighbors who joined us to celebrate our "Labyrinth of Love", a donation from our American Baptist Mission Society volunteers.

Many experienced the true meaning of its origin, which is designed for reflection, meditation and prayer for our community and personal experiences. We hope you'll join us for future events at the Labyrinth. Stay tuned for more details. 
PAR Releases the Guide to the 2015 Constitutional Amendments
 
The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana recently released the PAR Guide to the 2015 Constitutional Amendments. The Guide explains the potential impact of the four constitutional amendments that the public will consider on the October 24 ballot statewide. This independent, non-partisan review will help voters understand the issues and the potential changes so they may develop their own positions on each proposition.

Free community outreach fair this weekend
 
Join Pastor Willie L. Thomas III and Philippi Evangelistic Church Of God In Christ for their Annual Community Outreach Fair: Faith In Action 2015. The celebration will take place Saturday, September 26, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at 6325 N. Claiborne Ave. It's fun for the whole family with free food, drinks and a clothing giveaway. 
Pre-construction meeting to discuss Katrina-damaged roads and infrastructure
 
The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works and Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans will begin repairing Hurricane Katrina-damaged roads and infrastructure in the Lower Ninth Ward Quad 3 area next month. Construction is scheduled to last through fall 2016.

Tutors needed for All Souls After-School Program 
 
 
Students enjoyed a great first week back at All Souls' After-School program. They made ceramic fish plates with art teachers at St. Martins, artistically recognized Tulane for the Mac computers they donated to the lab, received a Top Scholar popcorn machine from St. James and learned how to exit the building as top scholars.

Councilman James A. Gray II will host a District E community meeting this Tuesday, September 15, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Andrew "Pete" Sanchez Center, 1616 Caffin Avenue. 
Free Recycled Planters workshop 
 
Learn how to transform trash into creative and fun planters for your home in a free, hands-on workshop with Groundwork New Orleans. The workshop is this Saturday, September 12, 2 p.m. at New Orleans Healing Center's Earth Lab, 2372 Saint Claude Avenue.

To mark 10 years since hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the Gulf Coast, 250 American Baptist volunteers from 28 churches, colleges and universities in 20 states and Puerto Rico participated in more than 40 projects in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward during American Baptist Home Mission Societies' (ABHMS) "Home Mission: 'Til the Work is Done" in early August.

Free brass band show at Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum
 
The Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum is excited to announce a new partnership with Preservation Hall! One Tuesday a month, the PresHall Brass Band will play a free show at the Living Museum for Lower Ninth Ward families, from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. These performances are not advertised, and are meant to give the people who live in the community an opportunity to come together to celebrate New Orleans music and tradition. It's a time for families and friends to come out, dance, drink, barbecue, and enjoy each other's company. The first monthly show took place last Tuesday. Stay tuned to find out about the next show.
