SECOND ANNUAL COMMUNITY BIKE RIDE
SATURDAY, APRIL 5th
Ride to connect the Upper and Lower 9th Ward and advocate for safe transportation options for bikers and walkers on the St. Claude Bridge!
This FREE ride starts at The Green Project, crosses the St. Claude Avenue Bridge to the Lower 9th Ward, stops on the levee at Deslonde, and wraps up at Bayou Bienvenue.
Join us at any of these stops!
9:30am Ride from the Lower 9th Ward - meetup at Sam Bonart Park at 1200 Forstall Street
10:30am Ride Starts at the Green Project, 2831 Marais Street
11:00am River to Bayou ride, meet at the Levee and Deslonde Street
12:00pm Ride ends at the Bayou Bienvenue Wetland Platform with Snoballs!

Hail to Historic Green 2014 Spring Greening !!!
A hearty thank you to all the Historic Green 2014 Spring Greening volunteers who spent a week in the Lower 9th Ward working on community projects.
Their energy and enthusiasm produced a rain garden in the back yard of our Chartres Street property and a Bayou Pavillion designed by Anne McTernan with rain catchment and a small rain garden on our Florida Avenue property.
But they accomplished much more at our Chartres Street house and at the Delery Street Playground. They topped it all off by hosting a crawfish boil for the community!
Thank you, Historic Green, for your seven years of support through Spring Greening Events in March of each year since 2008!

Common Ground Volunteers Plant Trees on CSED Florida Avenue Lot
Many thanks to James of Common Ground Reflief and to their volunteers who planted and mulched 1 pecan, 4 cypress, and 5 red maple trees on the CSED vacant lot at 5620 Florida Avenue. These volunteers came from near and far: New York, the College of New Jersey Alternative Break Club, the Share Institute from American River College in California, and the University of Mississippi. These hardworking young people continued their good works that day by planting trees in the Bayou Bienvenue Triangle. We are so very grateful that volunteers keep coming to offer their many hands in service to our community.
Colleen Butler Computerized Our Design Plan for CSED Lots at Florida & Caffin Avenues
We would like to give a shout out to Ecologist Colleen Butler who generously offered to volunteer her services to computerize our landscape design plan for the CSED lots at Florida and Caffin Avenues. The Florida Avenue lot will be planted with red maple, pecan, and cypress trees. The naturalized "island" blooming with goldenrod that currently exists in the rear of this lot will be enhanced with additional plants to further attract butterflies. A community fruit orchard will be planted on the Lamanche Street properties. A perimeter fence of recycled 4x4 posts strung with rope has already been installed.
As per our request, Colleen designed a temporary seating structure for the Caffin Avenue lot to stage groups of visitors who often come to learn more about the Bayou Bienvenue Triangle. She included an attached rain catchment system to provide a water source for the site.

A Hurricane of a Different Sort
Twenty-nine folks from the First Baptist Church of Hurricane Youth Group out of Hurricane (pronounced "hurr-i-kuhn" ;), West Virginia, blew into town this week & created a whirlwind of volunteer action, creativity, & hard work! The fabulous five that I worked with at the CSED community pocket park & orchard at 4817-19 Dauphine Street accomplished an amazing number of tasks in just three days! Hats off to Philip Bradley, Mark Moore, Timothy & Courtney Hayslett, & Alyssa Tolley for their service to our community!
Just look at the result of all their creativity & hard work!
Courtney & Alyssa weeded, & weeded, & weeded some more; planted new plants; laid down lots of landscape fabric; finished a brick border; & put down mulch.
Their constant, beautiful smiles as sunny as the sunflowers :)
Philip, Mark & Tim stood ready to create recycled slate & brick borders & a recycled brick entry path; load & place broken concrete pavers; cut grass, weed eat, dig dirt & much more!
We can't thank our volunteers enough for all their wonderful contributions. Their work uplifts & sustains us all.

Making A Real Difference In Gulf Region Areas Surrounding
Students from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin are in town performing Mardi Gras Madness with all their volunteer work! Today, in only 2 hours, they created a border of recycled slate roof tiles for our Community Garden at 4819 Dauphine Street! Throw them something Mister! ;)
Rochester Mission Group Rocks!
We would like to extend great gratitude to the Rochester Mission Group from Rochester, New York which included hard-working volunteers from Webster, Greece & Ogden Baptist Churches. Just look at what they helped us to accomplish at our 4819 Dauphine Street Community Orchard in just TWO DAYS!!
Donated ginger was planted along the perimeter French drain which they dug & filled with broken brick pieces unearthed from the soil. The French drain will redirect runoff into the soon-to-be-built rain garden. Along with general debris & trash removal, the first entrance pathway was created using broken brick, cement, & recycled roofing slate.
Holes were dug & measured & nine fruit trees were planted, watered, & mulched. Neighbors will be able to enjoy the harvest from 2 Satsumas, 2 Ruby Red Grapefruit, 2 Blood Orange, 2 Meyers Lemon, & 1 Persian Lime! Dreams do come true.
